Since the advent of the “Halloween” movies, most haunted houses in my area have been about the acts of the criminally insane. This seems to celebrate horrendous crimes, so I can see why many people of the non-halloween persuasion would have a negative feeling about this holiday we love. Please, please, please, can we make halloween and haunted houses more about spooky and creepy, rather than murder and torture? The most frightening haunted house that I have ever been in was one where I had to go into a long hallway of skeletons holding candles and there was a mirror at the end of the hallway. We fully expected someone to jump out with a mask on, but the spooky scraping noise scared us more than a fake “boo” ever would have! The great UNKNOWN is way scarier than a teenager in a mask!
My wife and I are Halloween extremists. Every year, we build a huge facade & a haunted walk-through and decorate the ENTIRE house (downstairs). Neighbors talk about us all year long. Today, at a gas station, a woman said “You’re the Halloween people…”. We throw a “private” Halloween party the Saturday before Halloween (average 120 guests and 20 service providers) and receive hundreds if not thousands of trick-or-treaters Halloween night. Our invitations are 6-page newspapers. We start planning the following year’s theme and decorations BEFORE the current year’s Halloween, so we can get a head start on after-Halloween sales for any new props or materials we need to buy. Our online photo gallery has over 1700 Halloween-related pics (4100 pics in all) and has had over 140,000 views. We are, without a doubt, soldiers… no, Generals in the Halloween Army.
